July Newsletter: Cosmopolitan Care is 1 Year Old!

2021-07-30T12:59:03+01:00

Our First Year It is our first birthday, at least I think it is. Strange, I actually do not know but I guess it is the day the website went live so it’s around now. Years ago, there used to be shop openings, usually by some second-rate celebrity cutting a piece of ribbon in front of the shop door. Sometimes it was a local dignitary like the Mayor or even the MP – anything to get in the local paper..!! These days you just go live! I am still a shopper and love those small independents who offer some [...]

2021-05-01T09:29:02+01:00

My experience of university as a disabled person was not too bad, even though there could have been areas of improvement. I do think it helped that I was studying through “The Open University”, the fact that I was able to study from home and not have to travel made it more possible to study, therefore more accessible. I struggle with travel as a result of my disability and multiple health conditions. “They were particularly good from the start to make me feel included and to try and make my study as accessible as possible.” [...]

Jas Taylor MA Gender, Sexuality and Culture BA (Hons) French Studies University of Manchester

2021-05-01T09:00:07+01:00

Attending university has been a truly character-defining experience for me, particularly in regard to my disability. When I first accepted my offer to attend the University of Manchester, I was nervous but incredibly excited. My college helped me to arrange a DSA assessment and I was positively surprised by how willing they were to accommodate my mental health issues. Unfortunately, I was soon to be disillusioned: I found the transition from home to university was a shock to my system for which I had very little support, and the workload soon began to pile on. Nonetheless, I found the course [...]

Phoebe Scoulding Education Studies University of Bedfordshire

2021-05-01T08:57:20+01:00

I am a final year student on the Education Studies degree at the University of Bedfordshire. A year after I started my degree, I had to defer my studies for two years because I became very unwell. I was eventually diagnosed with a heart condition called Cardiomyopathy (I previously underwent open heart surgery aged 4) and a low blood pressure. I could not have asked for a better response from my lecturers who sent me lovely emails to send me their well wishes whilst I was away. I was told that my health was very [...]

Access Ratings

2021-05-20T13:30:39+01:00

Access Rating is a social enterprise set up by 3 disabled friends to improve the disabled access to venues around the UK and support young disabled people into employment. We have an app that is available in the App Store/Google Play that gives users the ability to submit access reviews of venues around the UK, our main objective was to give our community a voice, so by collating these reviews we will then work directly with businesses to improve the disabled access to their venues. The profits from our work with businesses will be put back into our projects with [...]

Dom Hyams Warwick University Management (Business) Studies

2021-05-01T08:49:40+01:00

A brave new world of independence. Heading to University is a daunting experience for most students, but as someone that required essentially a great deal of assistance going about my daily life - heading to University was going to be completely life-changing, one that would see me not only living away from home for the first time but also away from those family and friends that acted as my safety blanket - helping me have an independent life. I was off to Warwick University to embark on a degree in Management (business) Studies - and I was all too aware [...]
