My experience of studying Computing at Arden University has been pretty unique up to this point, largely because I am what’s known as a Distance Learner. This means I don’t actually attend campus to do my studies, and instead, I do all my course studies through an online portal. One of the things I love about this is that it means I can conduct my studies from anywhere in the world that I have an internet connection!

“I am the first student ever from my former college (Treloar and Alton College) to go on to become a distance learner at University.”

Where some people might despair over not setting foot on campus, I like to look at the advantages and positives. All of the essential elements of university life and learning at my fingertips whenever I need them on my laptop. Also, as a point of personal pride, I am the first student ever from my former college (Treloar and Alton College) to go on to become a distance learner at University. I look on this as a massive achievement, and it feels pretty great to be something of a trend-setter, I don’t mind saying!

Studying for a BSc (HONS) in Computing is something I am very much looking forward to, and it will provide me with the skills and experience needed to one day open my own business in the field of Assistive Technology, a huge ambition of mine.

My experience in transitioning from college to university was surprisingly smooth, and I’ve listed some of the best experiences I had with the process:

“Meeting and interacting with students from all over the world has also been a really fun and fulfilling experience for me. “

  • Applying for student financing and my course with my transition worker was a breeze, and so much less stressful than I had feared.
  • Being accepted to Arden University on the strength of my BTEC grades from Alton College was one of the greatest days for me.
  • My assessment for Disabled Student Allowance was excellent, and I felt like I was able to give input into what I wanted and needed.
  • One of the best experiences I had was the excitement and anticipation of entering into my first year of university.
  • Getting a 1st on my Software Engineering module was a personal highlight for me, because of how hard it is to achieve this, and the amount of work I put in.
  • Becoming a student representative for BSc Computing Distance Learning was another massive accomplishment that I’m very proud of.
  • Meeting and interacting with students from all over the world has also been a really fun and fulfilling experience for me.

I always assumed I would never be able to attend university because of the extra support I would require, but I’m delighted that Distance Learning allowed me to fulfil my dreams.
